College football's newest signing day happened in October. On Friday, Oregon State freshman wide receiver Jesse Legree went back to St. Frances Academy, his high school in Baltimore, and announced live on CBS Sports HQ that he's re-signing with the Beavers for the 2027-28 season. No transfer portal, no offseason suspense.
It's an unusual scene, and it says a lot about where the sport is right now.
The nation's leading receiver, out of nowhere
Legree leads the country with 1,040 receiving yards and 14 touchdown catches, and he's the only player in the nation past 1,000 yards. He's averaging 148.6 receiving yards a game, has recorded at least 100 receiving yards in each of his first seven games, which USA TODAY reports is a program record, and has been named Pac-12 Freshman of the Week in each of the season's first seven weeks.
Nobody saw this coming. Legree was a three-star recruit who played defensive back for most of his high school career and switched to receiver before his senior season. According to USA TODAY, Oregon State was the only FBS school to offer him a scholarship as a receiver, and CBS Sports reports the Beavers called late on the first day of the Early Signing Period, after St. Frances teammates had already signed with Alabama and Auburn. He told CBS Sports earlier this month that he barely knew Oregon was a state.
First-year head coach JaMarcus Shephard told CBS Sports that general manager Eron Hodges had him watch Legree the day he got the job. Shephard was candid about the bet he was making:
"Now, if I'm just being transparent, I didn't know for sure how good of a receiver he was."
Why hold a signing day in October?
Partly because Legree never got one the first time. "It's always some kids' dream to live out on signing day, and unfortunately, I wasn't able to have mine last year," he said on CBS Sports HQ, adding that having one this year "for this contract is great."
There's a roster reason too. CBS Sports reports he picked the bye week to put doubts about his future to rest and get ahead of transfer portal speculation that had already started as scouting departments planned their 2027 rosters. USA TODAY put it plainly: had Legree entered the portal, he'd have been one of its most sought-after players.
Legree himself called it a contract, and he signed it with the season just past its midpoint. None of the reports disclosed what the deal is worth or what's in it.
Not everyone loved the show
The ceremony drew its share of eye-rolls. In a column for OutKick, Zach Dean praised Legree's decision to stay but argued the staged announcement showed the dysfunction of NIL and the portal. "It feels like an SNL parody," he wrote, adding that he didn't know "that we needed all the theatrics that came with it."
It's a fair debate. But for Oregon State fans, the result is hard to argue with: their best player is staying.
What it means for Beavers fans
Oregon State is 5-2, 3-0 in conference play and riding a five-game winning streak in Shephard's first season, averaging 42.7 points per game. CBS Sports frames Legree's return as a statement for a program that, along with Washington State, is rebuilding the Pac-12 after its in-state rival left for the Big Ten.
Legree wants to be part of that. According to USA TODAY, he told CBS Sports he re-signed "to start the growth at Oregon State" and to "hopefully bring in more people, more recruits and even more transfers to help us out."
Next up, the Beavers come off their bye with a Halloween trip to Fresno State. For fans who've watched star players leave every winter, an October signing day is a welcome change: a player telling them, months early, that he's not going anywhere.
